How popular are Espresso based coffee drinks in the Philippines?

Question by The Dogfather: How popular are Espresso based coffee drinks in the Philippines?

I live in Davao and I have been to a few coffee shops. I have yet to find a good one. Is it lack of knowledge or lack of good coffee beans? There are no Starbucks in Davao. Just curious. What are your favorite Espresso based coffee drinks? Hot or cold.

Americano, i.e. watered down espresso, and long black, which is similar. I can’t take pure espresso, too bitter for my taste. I order it decaf from afternoon till evening.

It’s less fattening than the other espresso based drinks. I can opt for brown sugar or Splenda or buy it with flavored syrup. My option whether to add non-fat, or just plain.

Hot if the weather is ok or am in an air conditioned environment. Iced when it’s really warm. But coffee is more fragrant when hot.

I guess good coffee is based on the quality of beans, the roasting, and how the beans were stored in the first place. An espresso machine certainly helps.

Barako is a good variety, as far as local varieties are concerned. In starbucks or other places, I don’t order their “coffee of the day”, it’s like playing dice as some varieties are bitter.
