Sometimes teachers are not the best role models or influences on a child’s development. I remember as a child one of my teacher’s having a fit in class over us talking. One day he let out a loud scream and threw a ball of plaster tack against the far wall. I’m sure he done this to get our attention and to get us to shut up, but I still remember it to this day and still think it was an overreaction.

In retrospect this behavior was unacceptable, but it was an emotional reaction to the frustration of the noise produced by us kids at the time.

This brings me to the title of this post. I was just reading a post by Mark Ashley where he mentioned that his wife had a music teacher who apparently pushed her personal beliefs upon the children in the class by making up a song about her distaste in coffee.

My wife grew up in Massachusetts, and her music teacher must have been a descendant of one of the original Puritan settlers. In chorus, the kids were taught a “coffee song,” which they sang , perhaps with fingers wagging, for the parents on recital night. The lyrics, approximately, were “C-O-F-F-E-E, coffee is not for me, it’s a drink that people wake up with, and it makes them nervous, it is a SIN…”

Although I agree with free speech and a person’s ability to decide for themselves on what they like or don’t like, I don’t agree with this teacher pushing her personal beliefs upon the children in the class.  The children has the right to decide for themselves when they get older if they like coffee or if they do not.  No person, especially teacher, should be influencing a child into thinking that coffee is a SIN.
