Starbucks unreasonably dangerous to the consumers?

Posted by Shannon on March 31st, 2007

Starbucks LogoI woman from Birmingham Alabama is sueing Starbucks claiming that their coffee is “unreasonably dangerous to consumers”.  The woman claims she received 2nd degree burns because her coffee was too hot even after she gave it “adequate amount of time to cool”. The woman is looking for $50,000 in damages.

I just don’t understand people these days.  The coffee is too hot?  Of course it’s hot, it has to be.  The coffee has to be a certain tempature in order to brew properly.  I don’t understand the mentality of people who think they will win a case like this?  I’m sure the case will be thrown out of court.   I have had the misfortune of spilling coffee over myself many times in the past.  The last thing on my mind was to sue, but hey, that’s just me.

Looking at the coffee grind

Squeeze and roll. Seems simple enough, doesn’t it? For Paul Kind, this isn’t exactly true. He is the inventor of the rim roller, a device specifically used for rolling up the rim on coffee cups.

“Paul is a problem solver,” said his wife Iona. “We would go to [Tim Horton’s] every Tuesday and struggle to roll up our rims. The first thing in his mind was that there has to be a better way. He was trying to make a living and in his spare time he would put his mind to that, physically making 12 different prototypes. It went on and on for 3 years; it’s been a long process to make it the right size and shape. I’m really hoping this works well for him because he’s worked hard for so many years.”

To some, the idea of having a device to roll up the rim for you seemed a little bit ridiculous. When asked if he would be buying a rim roller, third-year theatre and film studies student Tyler Shearer replied, “Absolutely not. Why do I have to pay for a product when I can just use my thumbs?”

Other students, such as fourth-year sociology student Jenn Mosselman and third-year English student Heather Cairnie, said that they might purchase one as a stocking stuffer or a gag gift. Mosselman added that it was “hilariously intelligent that they’re making money off of a contest that people love. But it just goes to show you that our society isn’t about need, it’s about want.”

Middle School teacher noticed that the coffee had an unusual odor Friday and reported it to the principal, Muncie Community Schools officials said. A student who overheard classmates discussing it also reported the incident to officials.

Urine was found in the locker of the eighth-grade boy, who admitted to putting some in the coffee, authorities said.

Internet café open and online

A group of Tim Horton’s regulars changed venues last week, trading in their double-doubles for a cup of organic, fair trade coffee at Annapolis Royal’s first Internet café.

It’s a promising sign for owners Danny and Krista McClair, who felt it was important that the new storefront keep its doors open after dark.

“We’re getting some regulars that we’re seeing, even in just a week and a half,” says Danny. “There was a group of guys here last night that every night they go to Tim Hortons in Bridgetown…They’re from the Annapolis area, so it’s just great to keep them here.”

The couple realized their dream purchasing the Pharmasave in town a year and a half ago. Previously living in Dartmouth, the two aspired to raise a family in a small community, and Annapolis Royal was the perfect fit.

“When we came down to Annapolis, we kind of fell in love with the little communities and this is where we can raise our family and spend the rest of our lives,” Danny explains. “We can’t say enough good things about the community.
